How Do You Stop Your Thighs From Rubbing When Exercising?

Stop Your Thighs From Rubbing

Having thighs that rub together or against your clothing when exercising is not only uncomfortable, but it can impact your health.

Chafing is one thing, but when the area gets rubbed raw, not only is it painful, bleeding and swollen, but the rubbed area can get infected.

However, you can reduce and stop your thighs from rubbing when exercising by making some small changes to your exercise routine.

How To Stop Your Thighs From Rubbing When Exercising

Your Clothes

First look at the workout clothes you are wearing. Is your skin rubbing in an area where two pieces of material are sewn together? If so, look for a workout outfit that has either covered seams or seams on the outside of the clothes and away from your skin. Also, remove any tags that might be causing irritation. Marathon runners frequently get chafed skin, if they don’t wear these specially-made types of running clothes.

Another is to buy clothes made from any of the new moisture-wicking materials. They tend to suck moisture away from your skin, keeping your skin drier and reducing the irritation.

Petroleum Jelly

Another trick runners use is to rub petroleum jelly on the areas that are most susceptible to rubbing. Or you can even buy an anti-chafing lubricant that is used by many runners. It tends to stay on better than petroleum jelly.

Talcum Powder

For some people, the rubbing is not caused so much from skin-on-skin rubbing (although that exasperates the situation) as it is from getting irritated by excessive sweating. In these cases, there are a few things that can be done to reduce the moisture and hence the irritation. One simple trick is to rub talcum powder on your skin. Not only does it absorb moisture, but it helps reduce the friction if skin does rub together.

Sweat More

As counter-intuitive as it may sound, one method of relief is to sweat more. To do this requires drinking large amounts of water – up to 64 ounces per day or more while exercising. The science behind this recommendation is that if you are not properly hydrated sweat dries on your skin leaving salt crystals behind which can irritate your skin. By having more water available to allow you to sweat more, the salt is more diluted and won’t leave as many crystals behind when evaporated away.

Of course, if you’re overweight, your thighs will gradually begin to rub less as you lose weight from healthy eating and exercising. Eventually, it will not be an issue anymore. But until then, use these tips to make exercising more enjoyable without the irritation of thighs rubbing.

The Risks of a Sedentary Lifestyle

Don’t let the issue of rubbing thighs stop you from exercising. It’s probably not coming as any big news flash to you that exercise and smart nutrition combine for an unbeatable system of health, vitality and wellness in both mind and body, from head to toe. Besides, if you live to be 70 or 80, but the last 40 years of your life are plagued by health problems because you decided you would rather sit and lounge your way through life rather than being active, is that really living?
