How To Exercise When You’re Feeling Tired

Exercise When You’re Feeling Tired

Two excuses commonly heard to avoid working out is either “I don’t have the time” or “I’m too tired”. The first one isn’t really valid as everyone can find time to exercise even if it’s going to a walk for 15 minutes.

However, the second excuse could be a valid one. And if you are too tired, is it mental or physical tiredness? Below are some suggestions on how to exercise when you’re feeling tired even though you really don’t feel like doing it.

Should You Exercise When You’re Feeling Tired?

Depending on the circumstance, you could, in fact, genuinely be too tired. If the stress from work has ratcheted up to the point where you are exhausted every night after work, your best bet may be to rest for a few days until things slow down at work. If you feel you may be starting to get ill, then definitely don’t work out. In this situation, your body needs all the rest it can get.

Change Your Routine

However, under other circumstances, where you’re just tired for no special reason, just stepping outside and breathing in the fresh air could be the motivation you need to do some form of exercise. Maybe just a change to your normal routine would help spur you along.

Instead of doing your normal three-mile run, but maybe walking a mile or two would suffice for that workout. The distance is shorter and intensity less, but at least you’re doing something. In the world of exercising, anything is better than nothing!

Lots Of Choices

Or instead of doing cardio training, opt for strength training instead. If that is still too strenuous, try yoga or Pilates – something that goes at a slower pace and intensity, but still provides a good workout. And with meditation and breathing techniques in yoga, it might be just what you need to get back in touch with yourself.

Sometimes just changing up things is motivation in itself. In these cases, being too tired might not be the case. You may just be bored with the routine.

Think About The Benefits

If you just don’t feel like exercising – like your get-up-and-go-got-up-and-went, think about how good you’ll feel post-exercise. Exercising releases endorphins in the brain which improves mood – known in exercise circles as a “runner’s high”. You experience it after each workout, so just thinking about that positive post-workout feeling could be the motivation you need to exercise when you’re feeling tired.

Of course, if your tiredness persists more than a few days, you should see your healthcare professional to find out why you are so tired. It could be a stress-related condition coming on or sleep deprivation. In any case, your doctor may be able to help you get back your motivation to exercise.
