Do you know how much sugar you should be limited to each day? For women, the magic number is just 30 grams, which is around six teaspoons and for men, it’s 45 grams or nine teaspoons. 1. You Can’t Help But Binge
If you pick up a bag of candy with the intention of only having a few but find yourself eating more to the point where you don’t feel well and end up with a sugar crash… and regret… there’s a good chance it’s an addiction that’s leading your eating. The next time you turn to pick up chocolate or candy ask yourself why you want it. Is it to soothe yourself after a bad day or because you just had an argument with someone? Then put it down and walk away.
2. Simple Carb Cravings
One way a sugar addiction may manifest itself is by pushing your body into craving simple carbs. Once you eat simple carbs they convert into sugar and feed that addiction.
Not sure what simple carbs are? Pastries, white rice, white bread, and pasta are a few of the best examples that a sugar addict may find themselves craving. You can combat this by including sweet vegetables in your meals – so choose carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes. That will help you fight those cravings.
3. Salty, Meaty Cravings
Are you having a craving for salty foods or meaty ones? Your body needs balance and to find that balance it will use the food you feed it. If you eat too many salty foods or a lot of meat your body may, in turn, crave a sweet to find balance. The opposite is also true, so if you’re craving salt or meat it’s probably because you’ve been overdoing it on the sweets. Salt and sugar are often hidden ingredients, so you should start paying more attention to food labels.
4. You Eat Them When You Don’t Want Them
Whether it’s because someone offers you something sweet and you accept it out of politeness or you just eat a candy bar because it’s in front of you – you find yourself rationalizing why you can eat it, even when you don’t want it. Fight it by keeping healthy snacks on hand.
5. You Eat Sugar Till You Feel Sick
Have you ever sat and eaten so much of your favorite candy or chocolate and then felt sick, sleepy, bloated, gassy, and had a headache? That is a sugar hangover. It’s not uncommon for sugar addicts to do this on a daily basis, though, it may only be a few times a week. Even when you know the end result you still find yourself shoveling that cake into your face.
6. You Eat High Amounts of Sugar Daily
If you eat sugar or sugary foods everyday, and especially if you eat more than the daily recommended 30 grams for women or 45 for men then you’re likely addicted. Do any of these signs ring true for you? The first step is in recognizing that it’s a problem and being ready to tackle it.
