Our attitudes toward food are established early. We learn food habits during childhood. It’s at that age we learn that food can manage our emotions and unfortunately, that’s something we find difficult to let go as we age.
It isn’t helped by the fact that the world we live in revolves around food and entices us to eat more. Then you do manage to scale your eating back and we restrict ourselves so heavily we are tempted by everything. It seems like the diet is destined to fail.
But there’s a different approach. Often, it’s our mind that trips up our weight loss journey, so here are 5 ways to prepare your mindset for weight loss.

1.Positive Affirmations
A positive affirmation is generally rooted in the present tense. You can fill your mind with these to help you remain positive. It’s all about staying positive and reprogramming your current food beliefs.
- I always choose the healthiest option as a way of supporting my journey.
- I own my choices and always make the right ones.
- I get closer to the healthiest version of myself daily.
- I choose physical activity and movement to stay fit.
- My mindset is programmed for weight loss.
You can use these throughout the day to clear your mind of negative thoughts and maintain a positive mindset.
2. Visualize Success
What is your ideal weight? Create that version of yourself in your mind and direct your own movie. Think about how amazing you look, how it feels to finally slip into your favorite pair of jeans that you held onto. How does it feel to be lighter? What has changed now that you’ve finally done it? Visualizations can help you stay positive.
3. Focus on Positivity
On a weight loss journey, it’s easy to get caught up in the negatives. You focus on what you can’t eat, and how you have to go exercise. Don’t focus on the negatives. Focus on everything you have to gain from losing weight. It will improve your health, you’ll be able to wear the clothes you want, you’ll feel better, you’ll have more energy, and you’ll be more confident. Think about the deliciousness of the foods that you can eat. This is your chance to get creative and experiment in the kitchen.
4. It Adds Up
Little changes add up. The decision to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning is a good habit. It’s a small change. Going out of your way to go for a walk, even for ten minutes, is a small, positive change. Choosing a glass of water instead of your normal soda is a small, positive change. Park at the back of the lot and walk further to the store. There are hundreds of choices you make in a day that you could choose differently. They are all small changes and when combined, you make major advances. These are healthy habits you’re building and when you make them consistently you change your life.
5. Keep a Journal
There is just one rule when keeping a dieting journal – keep it positive! Make it a record of your success. Note any positive changes you’re making, the compliments from others, your weight losses, and record physical changes you have noticed. Don’t forget to discuss the positive change in your feelings! When you hit a rough patch, you can look at the positivity in your journal and motivate yourself!
