Most diet programs today want you to believe that they (and only they) are the best diet for you when it comes to losing weight. But don’t be fooled.
Medical researchers, scientists and nutritionists all will tell you that there are really just two things that you need to look for when it comes to choosing the best diet for you. Seriously, only two things to think about! What are these two magic ingredients, you may ask?

1. It Must Be Healthy
If you’re trying to lose weight, then you’re likely doing it to improve your health as well as your appearance. After all, being skinny but unhealthy won’t really help you in the long run, right? So, any diet plan you choose needs to include foods that are nutritious, that have plenty of macronutrients (carbs, fat, and protein) as well as micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, etc.) because these are the components your body needs to be healthy.
Any diet that cuts out the necessary components for nutrition won’t benefit you in the long run. Any diet that is based on a food group or food item that isn’t particularly healthy also isn’t going to help you achieve wellness. You can indeed lose weight eating 1500 calories of cookies or bacon, but that’s because you’re restricting calories, not because you’re eating healthfully.
Eating a well-balanced diet that contains fruits, vegetables, lean sources of protein, and small amounts of healthy fats will ensure your continued health as well as enable you to lose weight. If you reduce your portions, create a better balance of macronutrients, and focus on nutrient density, you’ll be able to reduce your weight while still supplying your cells with all the nutrition they need to function correctly.
2. It Must Be Enjoyable for You
Any diet that forces you to eat the things you hate won’t be something you can stick with for very long. For example, if your diet plan calls for eating a large grapefruit every morning but you hate grapefruit, you’ll either end up skipping breakfast or reaching for an old standby breakfast foods that perhaps weren’t the healthiest choice. Instead, you should look for a similar food that you do enjoy that can provide you with the same nutrients.
Learning to eat healthy foods is a process for those whose diets have been poor for some time, but it’s possible to adjust your taste buds and learn to enjoy new foods that you previously didn’t like. Introducing new foods to your diet should happen gradually and give you time to adjust to new flavors, textures, and styles of cooking. Experimenting with foods and preparing them yourself also gives you a level of control over what you’re eating that can make trying new things more enjoyable for you.
Depriving yourself of something you really enjoy can end up backfiring and causing you to binge eat or give up trying to lose weight. Instead of giving things up entirely, your better long-term solution and healthier habit is to learn to enjoy special treats and foods in moderation and to stop using food to comfort yourself or boost your mood.
